Maryland Electric Choice
How to Choose Your Electricity Supplier
How To Shop Around For Your Best Energy Deal
Step 1. Start Gathering Information.
Start by calling Delmarva Power to receive your free Enrollment Guide. Included will be a list of electricity suppliers licensed by the Maryland Public Service Commission. When you call them, you may want to ask the following questions:
- What is the total price per kilowatt-hour?
- Does the price stay the same or does it vary?
- Are there any other fees I will be charged that are not included in this price?
- What are the terms and conditions of the agreement?
- What are the cancellation terms?
- Are there fees if I cancel my agreement before it is up?
- What is the length of the agreement, and what happens once it is over?
- How is the electricity generated (from what sources)?
- What billing options are offered?
Step 2. Compare Prices.
The Public Service Commission requires Delmarva Power, and every other Electric Company to clearly identify its price to generate electricity. This is known as a "Price to Compare." The price to compare is the average, annual price per kilowatt-hour that customers in each rate class pay for generation.
Compare Delmarva Power's "Price to Compare" with the prices of other Electricity Suppliers and select the best value.
Step 3. Calculate Your Savings.
To calculate your savings, determine the difference between Delmarva Power's "Price to Compare" and the price of other Electricity Suppliers simply by subtracting one from the other. If the supplier's price is less than the "Price to Compare", you'll save money. Multiply that difference by your average monthly kilowatt-hour (kWh) usage to determine your average monthly savings.
Step 4. Consider Environmental Factors.
You may be able to buy cleaner power, and possibly help protect the environment. All Electricity Suppliers must tell you how their electricity is generated (nuclear, natural gas, oil, solar, etc.).
Step 5. Make Your Choice.
If you choose a new supplier, making the change is easy. Contact the supplier and let them know you wish to enroll. Suppliers may send you a contract to sign, or allow you sign up over the phone or internet. It is then up to your new supplier and Delmarva Power to make the switch.
If you have completed your assessment and have decided to stay with Delmarva Power as your Electricity Supplier, then your work is done.
